NaNoWriMo 2009 – Day 12

Day 12 stats:

Min. Daily Average Word Count: 1,667

Word Count Goal: 2,500

Actual Word Count: 802

Daily Word Count Score (words in excess of min daily average): -865

Total Word Count Score: 20,500

Chapters complete: 9

First, I didn’t deliberately aim to stop at 20,500 today. Total fluke. Honest.

Second, I’m hitting the international road for a few days, and I have no idea how reliable my Internet connection will be. Updates may be spotty until I’m back next Tuesday. Taking the trusty Blue Ant Asus Netbook, but it isn’t practical for using Liquid Story. Will have to revert to local files backed up with a USB key. I will definitely be taking a local copy of the wiki I’m using for the Mia/Kenji/Sora stories (created it in wikidpad, which has worked really well). I found the wiki works really well and is far more flexible than the character functionality in Liquid Story (I use the wiki for everything – characters, items, places, etc.).

Third, and I know it’s getting repetitive, but act two is still bogging me down. I keep wanting to get Mia out of Korihana and have her meet up with Sora and Kenji, but I also know that the clock starts to tick rapidly towards the climax once that occurs. And I’m pretty sure you’re not supposed to have the climax in act two.  : )

So, I’m struggling to expand and explore the plot in act two to delay the three characters meeting. It’s slow-going and painful, but gems are turning up from all the word grinding, especially how spirits work in Gallidon.

I’m still playing around with different writing tools – please let me know what you like to use and what’s worked well for you in the past (and especially what didn’t!).

Math, Magic, and Storytelling Shell Games

A writer walks into a doctor’s office. “You gotta help me, doc. I keep hearing about everyone making money from self-publishing, and everywhere I go, someone’s trying to sell me their book.” “I see,” the doctor says, nodding. “So what seems to be the problem?” “Well, I figure if everyone’s writing a book, I should […]

A History and Future of Collaborative Storytelling

This is my (un)scientific, (non-)comprehensive, and (not at all) objective overview of the rise of collaborative storytelling: how we (more or less) got here, and where we may (kinda sorta) be heading. No particular axe to grind or agenda to sell, just my observations after watching this space for a few years. Buckle up, this […]
