The Writer’s Guide – a CC licensed report from Australia

This report was actually released last month (and I found it on the Creative Commons – Through the Looking Glass blog) , but I thought it was worthy of a mention and permanent tagging here.

The Writer’s Guide to Making a Digital Living: Choose Your own Adventure was written by Therese Fingleton, Christy Dena, and Jennifer Wilson. It’s a primer and guide on how to make a living from writing in what is an increasingly digital world (note: it’s obviously written from a “down under” perspective, but much of it applies globally).

From the report’s introduction:

The world of the Internet, computer games and mobile technology, broadly referred to here as the new media industry, is a rapidly changing environment, difficult to grasp and keep still long enough to examine. It involves professionals from all walks of life who approach it from myriad points of view. In writing a guide especially for writers, and including the experiences of writers already active in this multi-faceted business, this guide will take you on a rich journey that resonates beyond any immediate use-by date by being relevant, presented in context and designed especially for you, the creative writer.

The fact that the report was released under Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 2.5 Australia Licence just makes it all that more valuable of an offering!

I keep hearing about everyone making money from self-publishing, and everywhere I go, someone’s trying to sell me their book.” “I see,” the doctor says, nodding. “So what seems to be the problem?” “Well, I figure if everyone’s writing a book, I should […]

A History and Future of Collaborative Storytelling

This is my (un)scientific, (non-)comprehensive, and (not at all) objective overview of the rise of collaborative storytelling: how we (more or less) got here, and where we may (kinda sorta) be heading. No particular axe to grind or agenda to sell, just my observations after watching this space for a few years. Buckle up, this […]
